Mexican Jumping Beans

“man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 ESV

I recently stumbled upon Mexican Jumping beans…..I have not seen these since I was a kid.  Of course, I had to pluck down the $1.99 just to share this childhood memory with my kids.  Yeah, I know it is kind of silly, but we had fun watching and wondering what in the world we were actually viewing.  Did you know that Mexican Jumping Beans are not beans at all?  They are a seed capsule containing the larva of a small gray moth called the jumping bean moth.  They also do not really jump.  It just sounds like they are jumping and it kind of appears they are jumping.  However, they are just making the bean-like capsule move enough to make noise against the plastic container which houses them.  We have found they are especially active after feedings.

We have had these creatures home for several days now and I still find myself in search of the strange “sounds” every now and again, until to my embarrassment I remember it is just this strange phenomena we call Mexican Jumping Beans.

There seems to be a parallel to human beings here:  we put labels on what we see at a distance, not from any in-depth knowledge of the true person.  We cast judgments, “she’s conceited.”  “He’s a jerk.” from one or two circumstances before we determine if these were unusual situations or their normal operating mode.  Far too often we choose how we will befriend or ignore a person based on our initial experiences.

You cannot judge a book by it’s cover.

Mexican Jumping beans are not beans!

There is more to the person than meets the eyes.

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
