Let the Light In

Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you. Luke 11:36 NIV

When the sun hits about 5:00 p.m. in the autumn solstice, it shines brightly into my west facing sunroom.  Oh, how I love and enjoy the bright warmth that ensues.  However, it also brings a clarity and attention to something that existed prior to the arrival of the sun: the film of dirt that has accumulated during the summer’s windy and rainy days on the windows that encapsulate the sunroom.

This dirt makes me uneasy.  It makes me feel anxious, like I need to get the ladder out right now and start washing.  The reality of it is that it took me 40 hours the last time I washed all of those windows inside and out.  And well, I am just plain out of a 40 hour window during this busy fall season of sports, school and ministry schedules and the like.  So I am left with this uneasy feeling that something needs to be done, but it is left undone.

When the light is not shining in those windows, I tend to forget the ‘dirt’ that is still there.  Isn’t this true with our hearts too?  When God shines His light of truth into the depths of our hearts, we cannot help but feel the tension and pull for a “good cleaning”.  This is God’s gift called: conviction of sin.  If we are not reading the Word of God it is all too easy to forget about the dirt in our hearts.  We get numbed by our sin and the sinfulness all around us.  We compare ourselves to someone who is ‘worse’ than us to attempt to make ourselves feel a little cleaner.  Really?! Really. Ridiculous yes, but tell me you haven’t done it. I know I have.

The really amazing thing is that it does not require 40 hours or any length of time for the cleaning to occur, we need just give our dirt over to God…..He already cleaned it at the cross.  Now we need to ask Him to keep us relying on Him to keep it clean, rather than trying to take that dirty heart (thought, habit, words, anger, etc) back.

Lord, I ask you to let Your Light shine into our hearts right now.  Show us where we need Your healing, your cleansing, your strength to live differently.  Give us your Power to overcome the sin pattern that has gradually built up on the window of our heart.  Wash it pure and keep us in the light each and every day. Amen.

All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. The Lord works out everything to its proper end—even the wicked for a day of disaster. The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the Lord evil is avoided. Proverbs 16:2-6 NIV
