It is easy to let time slip away and get caught up indoors all day long, without the sweet smell of fresh air or a cool (in the North: a crisp) breeze on your cheek.  Experts estimate that adults spend 90 percent of their time indoors which poses a threat to our mental clarity.  This man-made environment with its recycled air is short on fresh oxygen and offers little natural light to induce an alert brain state.

We are disconnected from nature by four walls.  Nature provides a deeply restoring experience to better brain power: so much so, that some Doctors are beginning to prescribe outdoor time to patients who are so stressed out they can no longer think straight.

Moms have known that fresh air is good for their kids health for centuries.  Think about it: How many times do you remember your mom saying, “Get outside, you need some fresh air!”?  She was looking out for your better brain!

Wrap up what you are doing right now and take mom’s advice – get on out there for a few minutes of fresh air.  You will be glad you did it.  You will think clearer, feel better (providing you dress appropriately for the weather!), and quite possibly have that eureka idea on your oxygen-rich; thought-provoking time in the midst of nature.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” Psalm 23:1-3 NIV
