Wise-up Wednesday: Scent-sational Relaxation

Simple pleasures are often underrated and overlooked.

The Owner’s Manual for the Brain by Pierce J. Howard PhD records the following scents and their impacts:

Reduce Stress = Lavendar-chamomile

Induce Positive Mood = lemon, jasmine, cypress

Refreshing/Invigorating = basil, peppermint, pine, eucalyptus, and clove

Relaxed brain waves = spiced apples

Gary Schwartz of the University of Arizona finds that within one minute, spiced apple scent yields more relaxed brain waves and an average drop in blood pressure of 5 millimeters per person.  Spiced apple scent has also been associated with the prevention of panic attacks (Ackerman, 1990)
